Whats the film about?
When Jebadiah Sminch was 17, he made a vow that if he wasn't married by the time he turned 23, he would kill himself at 25. Carter takes place three days before Jeb's 25th birthday party.
DIRECTORS STATEMENT.
Someone I know, jokingly made the same vow as Jebediah Sminch. At the time, we discussed the commitment of a vow and the absurd contradiction it would be if that person were to fall in love, but after the deadline. I wanted to explore those moments, when the justification of someones existence becomes totally blurred. I knew this wouldn't be easy.I made Carter as a response to the cognitive dissonance I was feeling and witnessing in my own life.
Will Jebediah Sminch follow through with his vow?
As we began the three day shoot that eventually became the bulk of the film, none of us knew the answer. We could only tell the truth, moment to moment.
CARTER is an experiment in narrative about the absurdity of one's life.
Carter had it's world premiere in November 2009 in New York City at the Anthology Film Archive (as part of the New Filmmakers Fall Series).
