Our film 'Everyone Says I Look Just Like Her' , is having it's NYC premiere as part of the New Filmmakers Series at The Anthology Film Archives.
I would love to have you in attendance. We are screening on APRIL 1rst, at 8:30pm.


A little about the film: 

STARRING:Deirdre Herlihy and Joe Swanberg.

This microscopic examination of the new American family unity is a deeply personal film about sense of place, and the human connections that bond us all together. Two sisters, one white and one black, spend a week together at their famous fathers summer home. "Naturally Funny" with "Breathtaking lensing" shot in Northern Michigan.

As our year completes the first day of it's final month, I'd like to update ya on a few things happening with me. Us. we. I. They. right now.

-It has begun. The fourth and Final Season of our wacky web series THE REALLY COOL SHOW has begun production. This time we will be joined by a lot of familiar faces (well...if you know us, or know any of my films) both in front of and behind the camera. We are hoping to do some live events as well...so if you are a New Yorker or live in the surrounding area. Keep your eyes peeled and if something pops up, I hope you'll join us. We are going to try and make our show wackier and more absurd then ever. Each season we try to challenge our selves with better production value and crazier ideas. Spoiler Alert: Their may be wedding bells in the future.

-Post Production has wrapped for Stage Brother. It's been a year in the making, and Oh! What a year! And now I can press SAVE for the last time...at least for now. As we get this film in front of fresh eyes, I anticipate new perspectives will arise and of course, we'll be open to re visiting our film as needed.
Last night, I had the great pleasure of laying down the final mixes of Nathan Sandberg's excellent score, into the fcp sequence. I then compressed for dvd, burnt that dvd and shipped that dvd out to a film festival with a dec. 2nd submission deadline. These days, I have less and less insight about the way our little films will do on the circuit but I remain totally optimistic that as the work grows stronger, and our community builds, the films will find their audiences.

-The Kings of Yorktown. A film by Darren Marshall. We have a delicious rough cut of the film and have spent the last few days doing pick-up/re shoots. It's been like a reunion with folks/cast/crew that I don't get to spend nearly enough time with. We will officially wrap this final portion of production by the end of the weekend (Fingers crossed). I expect a summer-fall Festival circuit run (Fingers crossed). Darren has created a really fun, genre-bending film that I think mixes a totally unique and quirky humor with a sharp eye for dramatic story telling. I'm really excited and grateful to have been apart of this film both as a producer and actor.

Whats the film about?
When Jebadiah Sminch was 17, he made a vow that if he wasn't married by the time he turned 23, he would kill himself at 25. Carter takes place three days before Jeb's 25th birthday party.

DIRECTORS STATEMENT.
Someone I know, jokingly made the same vow as Jebediah Sminch. At the time, we discussed the commitment of a vow and the absurd contradiction it would be if that person were to fall in love, but after the deadline. I wanted to explore those moments, when the justification of someones existence becomes totally blurred. I knew this wouldn't be easy.I made Carter as a response to the cognitive dissonance I was feeling and witnessing in my own life.
Will Jebediah Sminch follow through with his vow?
As we began the three day shoot that eventually became the bulk of the film, none of us knew the answer. We could only tell the truth, moment to moment.
CARTER is an experiment in narrative about the absurdity of one's life.

Carter had it's world premiere in November 2009 in New York City at the Anthology Film Archive (as part of the New Filmmakers Fall Series).

Friends!
...If you haven't noticed, Darren Marshall and I are working together to raise supplemental funds to complete our budget for his second feature film 'The Kings of Yorktown". Darren is the screenwriter and director, and I'm helping him Produce the film (along side a great producing team) and acting in it.
The film's story is simple: Two brothers move to a small town in New Jersey, and begin work at a bank together.
I would like to give you a brief description of some of Mr. Marshall's previous work:

*Darren's first film "Crescent City" takes place in post-Katrina New Orleans. It will be hitting the festival circuit later this year. Watch the trailer HERE:

*After Crescent City, Darren made the short film "Breakable Girl", which just played in NYC as part of the NYC Short Film Festival.

*Darren was a producer on "Everyone Says I Look Just Like Her" and wore a million hats during the actual production, and we cut the film together. He was an extremely great creative partner and contributed so much to our highly collaborative process.

It's been great to see the new friends the film has made, and I'm happy to have been able to share it online for free. Today is the final day that it will be available to watch on the website. At the end of 2009, I posted 100 ways to be an artist in 2009, but this year, I'm adding ten more ways! I hope you will consider making your own list, and following it! This list is for everyone!

"The Great Work Begins!"

1.blog! (We care about what you have to say!)
2.Make vlogs ("video blogs" can be like an online journal or you can use them to share ideas)
3.Become a street perfomer (Holler, sing, dance, do shakespeare)
4.Start a dance company (I.E. Think Dance Collective www.thinkdancecollective.org)
5.Go DIY. Do it yourself. You got a vision. Find the medium and make it happen!
6.Dance. Just dance. In your house. In the streets. On the stage. Express yourself through your movements!
7.Sing. Be a singer in a bar, cabaret, on the subway train. Sing into an mp3 recorder. We want to hear your voice.

Some tips for viewing the film online:
1. Headphones always give a more home theater feeling, than computer speakers.
2. I personally prefer the on screen 700 by 525 ratio that the film is set up to on the site, but you can always press the icon on the lower right corner for full screen.
3. If you have a fast connection, you can keep "HD ON", but if your connection is a little slower or you have an older laptop or pc, it may play better if you keep the video set at "HD OFF". Honestly, I don't notice any huge loss in quality with that second option.
4. Share the link to the film. Let your friends know about the cause, and where they can watch the film.
5. Embrace this new form of media. It's not a theatrical presentation, with a large screen and surround sound, but it's something all together, new and exciting! Taking the time to view the film, will determine the future release of this film. So thank you!

Harry's Judy TRAILER

Real life ex-couple Richard Buonagurio and Lorelei Prince star in this fictional story about when a break up turns into a break down.

Harry loves Judy. Judy wants a change. “Harry’s Judy” explores a relationship coming to an end and the aftermath of the decision to go separate ways. Unfortunately, Harry doesn’t understand the concept of breaking-up, especially when he’s given so much of his soul to Judy. There’s no choice but to follow her.

The film is an experimental look at the candid aspects of the before and after of a relationship, shot in a documentary style with improvised dialogue.

You can now Rent or Buy CARTER (the naked series) on Amazon.
You can also purchase a digital download, to take with you anywhere you may go.
If you have a good internet connection, I suggestion the download or rental because it's cheaper. That being said, the dvd is only $10, So I guess you can't really beat that either.

The version online is slightly different than the cut we just premiered at the Anthology Film Archive. It's considered our "Naked Series" festival cut. The final directors cut will be available sometime early next year. Date TBA.

As the buzz grows for the World Premiere of Ryan Andrew Balas' 2nd feature film Carter, Tom Russell of TurtleNeck Films conducted a great, in depth interview with him. They hit some pretty deep topics, and he lets Tom's readers in on his creative process and the world that was created with his controvesial, experimental narrative film. Here is some of it after the jump:

I reviewed Ryan Andrew Balas's second film, Carter, back in June; on November 24th, it will be playing at New York's Anthology Film Archives. In anticipation of his film's premiere, Ryan and I had a short discussion via e-mail, about Carter, dividing audiences, the biblical Jephthah, and improvisation. (Spoilers below, though knowing what happens in the film spoils none of the magic of how.)

TOM: Sminch. The name itself is a little odd, Jeb Sminch, and he has these big glasses and moustache, he has this very particular body language, this very peculiar way of looking at things, his vow-- every aspect of his character seems to otherize him, to keep us at a distance, on the outside. We never really get to "know" him. Was this something that was planned from the outset? Was the question of "why" he does it ever intended to be resolved, even obliquely, or was it always a MacGuffin, a way to get the story going, to get us into this world and these characters?

RYAN: Jebadiah Sminch, as a character, is designed to have some moral ambiguity. I feel like it's important that he asks more questions than he answers, not just on an intellectual level but to serve as a defense mechanism to the aspects of life and himself, that he doesn't really understand. From the story point of view, the concept is certainly an entrance into a life that has a lot of layers but nothing about Jeb Sminch was created to merely push plot. I just wanted to spend time exploring someone who found this life to be so absurd that they felt they deserved the last laugh.

TOM: To be clear, I didn't mean to imply that anything about him was created mechanically for plot purposes-- he's a very organic and I think well-drawn character-- it's just that the film operates so much outside of him, that it is, as the title implies, really from Carter's point-of-view, and that, even after he "explains" why he's doing it, the audience, like Carter, still doesn't have a full understanding. I think-- and I could be wrong about this, as I certainly haven't sat down and measured it out minute-by-minute-- but I'm pretty sure Carter actually has more screen-time than he does, and other than the short prologue, she's given the first and the final scenes, the first and the last word, if you will. What prompted the decision to focus on Carter or to approach Sminch mostly through her eyes?

RYAN: Everything returns to Carter. As we shot the film, I found this to be true, over and over, the world seemed to revolve around Carter. For Jeb, it's not so much about whether or not he is ready to go through with his vow, but if he can truly leave her. We made the decision, after shooting the first bedroom scene with Julia (Carter), that we needed to see Jeb Sminch's life through the reflection in her eyes. I think, at some level, Carter represents the part of Jeb, that doesn't really understand this life. She is the question, he's asking.

TOM: So would you say that the greater emphasis on Carter evolved during the production? I know that the film's dialogue at least was largely improvised-- how improvised would you say the film was structurally/stylistically? Did you always have the same ending in mind? Or how about the scene with the two women going through his clothes?

"TCWreviews’s Administrator and Editor in chief Clifford Kiyabu sits down with Carter director for an exclusive interview. Ryan Andrew Balas is a Director, a Writer, and an Actor. He did this interview with me recently to talk about his new film ‘CARTER’ which will make it’s début later this month, as well as a little about himself and what is the driving force behind his style of filmmaking. But what makes him such a worthy person to have a sit down with yours truly is the fact he is a person with a impressively strong will who will not stop until his daydreams become a reality for all to see. Such ideals are that of a genius in the making.

CK: First off let me thank you for making time to do this interview, you must be very busy with the premiere of CARTER just around the corner.

RB: No problem at all, totally my pleasure. Thanks for taking the time to ask these questions, it's very appreciated. I'm busy promoting the screening for sure, and putting the final touches on my directors cut of the film. I also stay fairly preoccupied day dreaming about the other projects I’m working on. I'm a hyperactive guy.

CK: So before we get into talking about the film I think it would be great if my readers got to know a little bit about the man behind the camera first.

RB: The man behind the goofy glasses!

CK: So sell us a little about yourself

RB: I'm a Midwestern transplant. Born in Indiana and spent my teenage years in Michigan. I moved to NYC in 2004, to study acting, I did the first year with the Upper West side as my campus. In 2005, I hopped over to the west coast and completed my conservatory training in Los Angeles in 2006 and shortly thereafter, moved back to NYC. I've been happily living in Queens, with my girlfriend, two dwarf rabbits and two cats, ever since. I tend to get the most work done when I stay up all night, so I get very little sleep. I'm a huge day dreamer and try to go for a good brain storm walk, every day."

Blue Collar Bastards-rogue cinema review

Rogue Cinema's Brian Morton reviews the new webseries by Mark Lewis.

In Bay State Blues, Mark Lewis gave us a real life story of real life people. Now, in Blue Collar Bastards, he takes some of those characters and brings us further into their lives. Scott Lewis is back as the leader of the group, Mike and Ryan Balas and Tony Ezzillo return as Oliver and Tony respectively. This is slightly different than Blues, in Bastards Lewis is giving us a look at the different lives of these three working class heroes.

The first five episodes are already up and running on YouTube and in them we, first, catch up with the guys on a job site, which finds newbie Oliver in a little trouble, but, as the episodes move forward, we're dragged further into the lives of these three guys who are just trying to make a living, and it's not all laughs and work.

What Lewis has really captured here are real guys, doing real work. If you're a guy and you've ever worked on a crew, whether it's construction or not, you'll soon see that Lewis has captured the working class man perfectly! Here are three guys who spend a lot of time together, but most conversations are fairly superficial. But that doesn't mean they're incapable of getting a bit deep, it's just that guys don't do that too much. Blue Collar Bastards feels just like real life unfolding in front of you, you can check out the first five episodes over at the LevRock Pictures YouTube page. I'm giving this series four out of four cigars, it's believable and it makes me look forward to future episodes...and interested in seeing what Mark Lewis might have planned next!

In preparation for me new film, I'm reading anything and everything about other peoples process. I'm also watching a ton of different movies (thanks netflix!). A film that I plan to watch when it is released is Bobcat Goldthwait's "Worlds's greatest dad" starring Robin Williams.

Michael Tully and Hammer to Nail did a great interview with Bobcat, about his work and process and though the element of industry status and celebrity is there, I have a feeling our philosophy's aren't that far off---

H2N: As far as aligning yourself with people who trust your vision—from the top down—I’ve been hearing so many horror stories from friends who are supposedly hired for “their vision” and they’re told they’re “so great” and then when they try to bring their own ideas to the table, the powers-that-be are like, “Um, no, this is what we want.” That doesn’t make any sense to me.

BC: That’s why if I keep making movies I’ll keep making them really small, because I’ve already been down that road too many times, you know? As an actor and as a comedian, where you don’t have any say. So if the sacrifice is that I have to go on the road and do stand-up to pay my bills, I’m willing to do that because I don’t want to give up the control.

H2N: Is it hard for you to “kill darlings?”

BC: I don’t ever get married to anything, because I know that I’m gonna be sitting around watching it some day with people who aren’t laughing, so when that stuff is on the bubble and not playing, it’s over-magnified. Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are friends of mine. I showed it to them, ‘cause I’ve known them from years ago. And on this one John goes, “In stand-up, you used to always make points and then you’d stick it in.” I go, “I guess, yeah,” and he says, “And then you’d twist it.” I go, “Yeah.” He goes, “When you were doing stand-up, you used to only twist it maybe one or two more times.” I go, “I wasn’t aware of that.” He goes, “Yeah, with some of the jokes here, you’re twisting two or three times.” That was a really big help, actually, ‘cause he’d say, “Look at this and look at that.” But that’s a big difference between a friend pointing out something—who is a director—and some suit who’s not gonna be there next week giving you notes on a film that they didn’t develop.

H2N: Or who thinks that they aren’t doing their job if they don’t make their presence felt by giving feedback, however inappropriate and wrong it might be.

BC: Yeah. I’ve been down that road, and I still do work for people—like Kimmel or Dave Chappelle or something like that—where all I’m trying to do is facilitate those guys and make sure that they’re happy with the product. But when outsiders start giving you crazy notes… (BC laughs)

As you may know, I've been busy working on several film projects this year, being distributed in multiple media platforms. I'm currently working on a new film project to be shot in high definition, late this summer, entitled "Mother/Sister". I am the writer/director and will be acting in the film. This is my third feature film (Sandcastles, Carter) and my web series (The Really Cool Show) has over 8 million views. I want to talk to you more about the upcoming project and how you can participate.

The film is the family drama reinvented for the modern twenty-something generation. Two sisters, one black, one white, in coastal New England take on the challenge of growing up and moving on. The characters in "Mother/Sister" have the spirit it takes, to redefine diversity in the face of adversity, while growing stronger in sisterhood. This film is a non-traditional examination of the role of family in our lives and what it means to keep a loved ones spirit alive, even ten years after they've passed away. This film has the spirit of many other great films such as:

The film begins production on Sept. 14th, 2009.

--Note: I think their is important, valid points from both sides of the debate.

I see the economics of free being slightly different. I think we could show indie films online, and gain even greater exposure than a small festival run, and create a demand, increasing the value of the products we already sell outside of the online release.This allows all of the online content to remain free and accessible. This is an important element for the exposure of the films and to the culture of online media.
We can adopt the same strategy (and could work along side) as a film fest run. We aren't in the business of making money at festivals, there isn't a viable business model set up for that yet---we are in the business of creating value and demand on a product that we are going to offer. Look at the disposable razor example from this article---he did whatever he could to get the product in the hands of the consumer, creating a demand. Most importantly, influencing a cultural shift in the world of a specific task. He made his product something people wanted to have, and were willing to adjust the way they were used to doing things. I see this as the cultural shift in the way we view media...the web. The statistics show that the consumer/audience is willing to spend more time viewing media online and even when their attention span runs out, they are still willing to spend money on mediums that are suitable for their old ways of doing things. Studies are showing that the consumer, on average, is watching 15 minutes of a film online, then considers purchasing the dvd.
Look at The Really Cool Show for example, no budget, limited marketing and still 8 million views and growing. We did a season three, because there was a demand for season three. Here is where we can learn from the mistakes. The Really Cool Show didn't start with a strategical marketing plan nor a full team to utilize that opportunity. We also didn't have a business model, so now we are forced to work backwards and figure out a way to monetize on our past. The really cool show has made its money from merchandise sales (hats, pins) and producer donations, and a tiny amount from Ad share revenue from blip.tv. Now, with that being said, we've created a process of working that allows the shows production cost to remain low and it's online presentation is totally free to produce and to watch.
If a team of filmmakers conceived a day and date release for their films to go online (maybe even at the same time?!), imagine the kind of buzz it could create. Also---is there any independent company that has releases its entire catalog online, and selling the dvd?! I don't think so. It could make history!
As for the technology, there are no longer any gate keepers! We can present our films, in their entirety in HD or in the case of 24p dv, full quality! Of course, I understand their is a debate about which online video site to use---as a filmmaker, I much prefer Vimeo. It offers full HD html embedding, which means you can post your entire film anywhere you want, including: facebook, myspace, twitter, tumblr and blog spot. It's easy to share. I feel that youtube is crowded with corporate owned content, and home videos. What I've learned, from three seasons of The Really Cool Show is that you can re-direct your audience to see your work anywhere---as long as you consider exclusivity and create demand. It doesn't always happen over night, but with time, it's totally possible.
The most important aspect of the economics of free, is that not only do you present your media free of charge, but the cost to do so is very close to zero and growing closer by the day.

Think of it as a theatrical run, or festival run---except cut the costs to do either of those, and you have the control of the release.
Now of course, if a film has the opportunity to do any of those two things, then by all means, that's the right thing to do. I'm just thinking of ways to increase revenue streams and to create a larger demand and exposure range for the film.
If a distribution company is interested in the film---and they know that the audience has already been 10 million world wide---I can imagine they would want to jump on, and be the ones to put out the dvd with loaded special features. And if they don't, we have the option, as filmmakers, to do a strong self release and maximize our potential to benefit from our hard work and offer the opportunity for your collaborators to do that same.

So we have the culture of media shifting, and the tools to adjust our work to be presented in that growing format---but what about the audience? They watch films on personal dvd players, ipods, and on airplanes but they don't know if they want to watch films on lap tops? They don't mind hours of facebook, twitter, tumblr, myspace, youtube---but we aren't ready to watch feature films online? I just don't think companys like Netflix, Amazon, Itunes, Hulu and media rights pioneers Cinetic, are making a blind gamble. I think the audience is there. I don't think the media is. As a consumer, I would like to see more independent and festival films have online distribution for FREE, PAY-WHAT-YOU-WANT or basic Download Fee (such as what Itunes offers)---this is where media is going, the audience is there but the films aren't.

Now, it's important to note---the fear of NO AUDIENCE is a legitimate one.
An online release of an indie film would need to work strategically with an audience building method, significant buzz and a strong grass roots effort. The internet is wide and their are so many directions to go---the audience needs to know where to go. So we can't guarantee it's going to be an over night success--we can at least give the audience the option to decide.

The economics free in relation to arts, from my angle, is this: Independent art in its creation and presentation is moving closer and closer to free, so why can't its consumption be the same? If we create a media outlet in which art is free to make, and free to experience/watch, then a cultural shift will take place. That cultural shift in the way we view media, will create a demand this creating value--and with value comes the option of monetary return.

At the core of this "business" proposal, is the reliance on the artist to make good, honest work. The audience is waiting.

Dear voice of independent film,
Spoiler Alert: You aren't speaking for me, like you think you are!

Lions, Tigers and Structure, OH MY!

Structure is not the enemy! In fact, it's just a word. A word that is defined by inter-related components, a relationship to a community or entity, often intangible.
The idea that a structure is just one thing, is completely absurd and certainly not a defining characteristic of the subject. In short, don't be afraid to be part of something, cause you already are, and guess what?...it might be completely different than what I'm part of...and they are both structures!
The indie film community, or whatever clever marketing word is produced as a tool for the media, relies on the structure of it's collaborators. In defense of the lone do-it-yourself auteur, your subject can be considered your collaborator. A community relies on the participation of the individual. This is a structure. A community has a structure. Now, I don't mean a business plan or a mission statement. This is not a battle between the suits and the artist's. Those things are for dramatic circumstances in your next brilliant screenplay. This is about understanding who we already are, and perhaps where we can go. Keyword: WE.
I would like to suggest that we consider this an observation on the "D.I.O" method, rather than the slowly leaning towards a negative connotation "D.I.Y." method. "Do It Ourselves", seems far more appropriate for the community that I feel like I'm a part of. In fact, I dare say "D.I.Y" doesn't even belong in the filmmaking vocabulary anymore. I mean sure, someone can write a script, shoot it all, star in it, edit it, and sell it --but why the hell would you want to do that? From my perspective, the joy of filmmaking is the collaboration process, when you get to be involved in your community, and share the creative process. I don't want to get too caught up in vocab here---I just want to give you some perspective.

DISTRIBUTION doesn't have to be your day job!

Distribution, is the art of sharing. The process requires an individual to share an entity with another individual. This is a the beginning of a structure and relationship. The mainstream approach to media distribution is the relationship between an artist and a network of revenue channels. Usually a broker seals the deal between the artist and it's network. The network goes from being the buyer, to the seller. It distributes the work, using its revenue channels to share the media. Self distribution is the marriage between the artist and the network. This requires the artist to continue to create work while creating a network in which to hustle the work. At the most basic level, the middle man is no longer required. Not every self-distribution method requires the creator to promote, sell, package and mail the work. New technology and media business now allows the creator to maintain control of the work, while dictating a percentage of the labor to an outside source. This process may cut into the percentage of profit that the creator makes, but the labor is also distributed accordingly. Some people complain of the outside source not being transparent enough, but from my experience, it's as obvious as many other forms of business.
Independent film distribution doesn't always involve a brokered deal and an advance, but on the split side, It also doesn't mean you have to promote, sell, package and mail your own work. There's a huge spectrum of method's and each film requires something specific and thought out. There is no defining perspective on this idea. It's just important to remember, at it's most basic, distribution is about sharing something with someone else.

Creativity requires artistic integrity!

As a great filmmaker once told me, "the audience doesn't know what you were going to do, they only know what they see." It's important to approach the work with integrity. We must be pure in our intentions. Respect your audience enough NOT to consider them while you are creating! There is a really good chance that what you've made isn't beyond them, no matter the subject. When it comes down to it, film is about watching humans behave, sometimes within the context of a narrative. Stories are older than words, and so is human behavior. Film is about the observation of humans, not the creation of them. This should take the weight off of our shoulders.
Within the industry, and even with the self proclaimed rebels against it, there is the pressure to think of the audience. In fact, I was once called an "amateur" filmmaker, for not considering the audience ahead of time. The need to please is a huge mistake! Be true to your intentions, not your need for acceptance---that's artistic integrity.

It takes TALENT not MONEY to make great work! Talent is the art of believing in your creative process and constantly working to fully realize it.

Recession is a word, not a boundary. If I want to make a film, I'm going to do it. If I want to make a film, put it in a major film fest, and sell it, then I'm going to do everything my heart tells me to do, to make it happen. If I want to make a film with friends and self distribute, there are many roads to take and luckily for me, none of them are wrong!

Independence is the very spirit of art. To make films, requires one to find that independence. Don't you dare accept anything besides true artistic integrity.

Dear voice of indie film---there is nothing wrong with the independent film structure, except for you and your vocabulary.

As I'm sitting and working on my new script, I'm listening to the newest record by Portland-based singer/songwriter Ryland Bouchard.
"Seeds" is the kind of record the feels like an experiment in experience, being driven by emotional trial and error rather than some melodic narrative. It's a really moving album with surprises around every corner. It's been a pleasure stumbling upon this haunting work. Ryland's self directed super 8 music videos are equally as moving and heartbreaking as the song's they highlight.

Bear Facts and The Lionshare

I recently got to watch a screener copy of Josh Bernhard's film "The Lionshare".
The Lionshare is the debut feature from writer/director Josh Bernhard. Shot with consumer equipment and a “do-it-yourself” ethic, the movie is being shared with its audience in the same spirit.

-I enjoyed the film, and thought it was beautifully shot. I was surprised to find out that it was scripted, because the dialogue was so casual and the performances were so natural.
The film's sub plot was most interesting to me, regarding the lead's roommate and his relationship with his father. I think the idea of a sub plot being more interesting in the case of these twenty-something relationship (with people and technology) films is noteworthy, because it really highlights the directors effort to actually say something. It gave the film a sense of weight and layers. I could relate to the film, as a male viewer. I think the dude style friendships were spot on. I would have liked to see more of our female lead love interest. I think it would be an interesting companion film (and im not suggesting actually making it) to see what she does during her days, with her friends. This is a moment to moment, real life kind of film, and it's comforting to know that other people are doing the same things as we are---making music for girls, online dating, chillin, drinking beer and trying to figure out what the hell to do with your time after college.
If you are interesting in d.i.y relationship films, from the male perspective, then I recommend trying to catch a screening of The Lionshare. It was a fun film!

Irena's Vow

Last week, I went to see "Irena's Vow" on Broadway, thanks to the reccomendation of social/political blogger Ryan J. Davis (thanks again, ryan!). Unfortunately, I was dateless to the event, but was happy to have an empty chair beside me, to hold my red wine.
I had a lovely time at the theater, and am always interested in plays about the holocaust. It is a subject that is timeless in it's message and urgent to be told..as the real Irena would say "before history repeats itself. The message of universal love, and the power to look evil in the face and refuse to give in to it's iron fist is very important now and forever. There was a moment in the play (spoiler alert!) where one of the jewish women in hiding has to make a decision whether or not to have a child (she finds herself pregnant...even under such difficult circumstances)...it's a matter of life and death. The woman can abort the baby and help protect those in hiding...or she can have baby and risk their capture. Irena makes it very clear that if the baby is aborted, than hitler wins. It was a very interesting dilemna that I found myself on both sides of, at different times in the play.
The play used video clips as part of the multimedia set design. It was very enjoyable connecting the film world with live theater and I think it's a very effective storytelling method. There was a moment in the play where Irena described the gathering and murdering of Jews within a ghetto and as the story built, red light gathered on the back drop, making a very clear and powerful statement that I will never forget. The power of hate is a very scary and persuasive tool.
The acting was great...many very real, and intimate moments. However the leading lady's reputation proceeds herself (and if the 75% name above the title, full page bio, and only character in color on the poster doesn't give it away...then I dont know what will). There was a moment when Irena (Tovah Feldshuh) turns to the audience and says "I love you all, I really do" and I couldn't help but feel like maybe she expected us to same the same thing back to her. In that moment...I didn't see humble Irena.
The writing was a good mix between drama and comedy while pushing the narrative forward. There were times I felt it felt distinctly North American and a little contemporary but as I said, the story is timeless and I think that it helps to translate the themes to a new audience.
If you are in the New York City area this spring/summer and you want to laugh and cry...go see Irena's Vow on Broadway. The story is important to share.

How the hell can anyone make money from web tv?

Interesting discussion over at tube filter news, in regards to the monetization of web series and web video content.

"No one said monetizing web television in 2009 would be easy — after all, traditional television revenue models are falling flat in this down economy too. Whether it’s an advertising rev-share with a web television network, a product integration deal, or a flat out sponsorship, the truth is, web television shows still haven’t found their legs when it comes to braving the Sea of Monetization, and unlike the film and television industries, no one is eager to boast about how much, or even if they’re making money in web television, so more often than not, creators don’t really know what to expect."...

As a creator of a web series, the only advice I could suggest to maximize the potential of profiting from a web series, is to have a plan of action before the release of the series...and perhaps even before production begins.Once content has a hit the web, it's left to masses to decide it's future.

My series THE REALLY COOL SHOW has over 7 million views, and has made little to no actual profit from ad-rev sharing sites like blip.tv and revver. The show built it's audience at youtube and that's where the majority of hits/views comes from. We were on youtube before they began any of their AD rev-share programs and do not currently benefit (finacially) from our 7 million views. HOWEVER, from a creative and marketing standpoint, we have learned an endless amount about building an online audience, and the patterns of web video demographics and the 7 million (and growing daily) audience alone, has given our little show a voice. I strongly believe that with a plan of action set in place while in the pre-prod stages of a new series, the creator would have the max potential to profit from his/her online content. There are few examples where this is evident, as we are still in the early stages of real web tv. But I suspect more ideas and plans of action will arise as art tends to flourish in times of financial hardship.

Some ideas for a lo/no budget web series to maximize potential of gained revenue and the opportunity to profit can be simplifies to a few basic things:
1. Upload to as many ad-rev share web content channels/sites as possible.
2. Sponorship/Sell Ad space. *This plan may not allow you to use #1, because sometimes sponsorships or AD Space (specifically hosted on a site rather then in emeded into the content) would require exclusivety.
3.Sell Merchandise (shirts/hats/pins) and DVD's with content not avail online.
4. Subscrition only web site.
5.Pay-Per-Webisode (much like Itunes tracks).

These are just a few ideas. Keep in mind that a show with lo/no budgets, unknown talent and minimal marketing (including social networking) needs to have an audience for any of these to work. That's where the equation gets tricky. In order to build an audience, you need to have content and in order to maximize potential of finacial gain from content, you need an audience. How does a creator deliver a product to a customer who doesn't even know they want the product?
A. The product has to be awesome! Creativity and artistic integrity are key elements of content with the potential of longevity.
B. The customer has to be lacking something. Make something new! Give the audience something they've never seen before.
C. The product has to be accessible. Make it easy to get! Bring it to the audience.
D.Publically promote it. Just because it's web content, doesn't mean you can't bring it (or aspects of it) to a public (or live) audience!
*In the case of The Really Cool Show we developed and peformed live shows based on our online characters.
-Public screenings
-Promo Parties (find a cool bar/venue, bring them a crowd and find aa liquor sponsor and buy the boozr yourself) You don't even have to show the content to prove that it's totally hip and that the audience will have a good time watching it. Throw a party!

Now, these are all theories, but I would be curious how they work for you, so please feel free to join the discussion and share your ideas or experiences.

It's important to create a dialogue with your potential audience. So don't be afraid to reach out and ask "Thank you for watching, how can I help you?"

The Really Cool Show 2007 TV PILOT

Hey Friends,
In the spring of 2007, The Really Cool Show made a tv Pilot for the NY Television Festival. Unfortunately, the pilot did not make it into the festival, but we all really loved it and finally it's made it's way to the web.
The pilot is a combination of jokes/plot from the first 6 webisodes of the series, re shot and cut with lots of new material.
The resolution isn't great, and the audio sync seems slightly off, by the girls are cute and the jokes are hot, so please take a gander. If you like it, please share it with a friend.

When producer/director Princeton Holt sent me his own “Cookies & Cream” for review, I was also surprised to receive two other films made under his One Way or Another banner. Watching the second film I received in that package today- “carter.”- I’ve begun to see a pattern in the types of films he and his collaborators are interested in making.

Like “Cookies & Cream,” “carter.” is about idiosyncrasies in human behavior. In the first film, it was how the main character struggled with relationships when she ran an adult website to make end’s meat. In “carter.,” by writer-director Ryan Andrew Balas, the main character- Jebadiah (Mark Robert Ryan)- has a good job, good friends, and a great girl (Julia Porter Howe, who plays Carter). He couldn’t be happier. And yet, he remains compelled to carry out a decision to kill himself.

The film doesn’t explain what led to this decision, and why Jebadiah looks to carry it out, taking the same point of view of Carter and Jebadiah’s work friend Donald (Richard Buonagurio) in trying to get down to the bottom of this inexplicable choice. A sequence where we see Jebadiah walking around New York- stopping off at a kid’s jungle gym in the park- illuminates some of the bruised psyche the character carries through life (aided by a score by Nathan Sandberg that captures that melancholy), but doesn’t quite get to the heart of the decision.

In a way, this only works to the film’s advantage. It makes the story more in keeping with true human nature and real life, where no one really knows what the other one is thinking. Admittedly, the ambiguity in the story is hard to get into at times, but by the end, you feel a genuine connection with these characters that’s hard to ignore. I look forward to watching the third film Holt sent me- “Uptown”- in the coming days.

Hey Everyone--
a few things happening.
I'm now working full time as a filmmaker/artist/Blogger.
Harry's Judy-a film by Richard Buonagurio, being produced by me, is turning out good and nearly wrapped. It's been such a different kind of production then what i've done before. We've actually spread out shooting over the last three months. It's given us time to look at footage, consider/reconsider storylines and to invent totally new directions for the film to go. What started as a relationship/break up film has gotten a little darker and has gone a little deeper in to the obession element of it's title character "harry". I'm very excited to see it shape.

The Really Cool Show SEASON THREE is on production hold for now, we all got very busy with other projects and apologize for the delay. Lucky for all of us, theres two season online they still need some love! AND as of FEB. 2009, We hit over 6 million views! So thank you to everyone who has been supporting the show. And Personally I'd like to thank the greater majority of South America, Who statistically appears to be our number one demographic. Strange how that works.

New Swanberg Film!

Kris Swanberg has made a film, and shot it Costa Rica, no less.
Her debut feature (as a director) is titled "It was great, but I was ready to come home" and will premier in competition (narrative feature) at this years SXSW film fest. Congrats to Kris!
We love the title! And are looking forward to the film.

You may know Kris's work as co-director and star of the web series Young American Bodies (www.youngamericanbodies.com) co produced by IFC and Nerve.com.
She also played a supporting lead in Joe Swanberg's (her husband) Kissing on the Mouth.
She also directed the short doc "Bath Water"( I believed you can watch this on her myspace page); and the honest sex doc series "Boys and Girls" on nerve.com

We are promised their will be a trailer up for her new film, SOON! SOON! SOON!
So keep an eye out for that.
